A new charger
There comes a point when you have to think about replacing your charger, certainly once it has stopped working. But the condition of the charger itself and of its cables matters just as much. We often see e-bike batteries handed in with chargers that are really no longer safe. Insulation tape around a power cable, or a join made with terminal blocks, is not something we recommend. Fortunately, power cables are often available separately and easy to replace, because they are plug and play.
What to look out for with a new charger
When you buy a new charger, check that the voltage and the power are right. The charging plug has to be compatible too, and that is where the pitfalls are. A widely used charging plug is the DC plug. At first sight it looks simple, a plus and a minus, but there are subtle differences. There are DC plugs with an outer diameter of 5.5 mm that differ in inner diameter (2.5 mm or 2.1 mm). It seems a small difference, but the battery only charges properly if the plug fits correctly.
Types of connector
Chargers with more complex charging plugs, for example with several contacts, need extra attention. A three-pin connector, for instance, can carry a different voltage on each pin. Each pin has to go into the right position in the matching connector. Always check the connectors for dirt and moisture as well.

How do I know which charger is suitable for my e-bike?
Whether a charger is suitable depends on the specifications of your e-bike battery, above all its voltage and capacity. Make sure the charger matches the voltage of your battery and has a suitable charging current. Also check that the charger is compatible with the make and model of your bike. You will usually find this information in the manual of your e-bike or on the battery itself.
What are the differences between charging plugs, and how do they affect charging?
There are different kinds of charging plug, such as the standard DC plug, XLR connectors and plugs made specifically for certain e-bike brands. They differ in shape, size and number of pins. The wrong plug can give a poor connection or even damage the battery. The charging plug has to fit and make a good electrical connection with the battery. The extra pins are often used to communicate with the battery. Chargers that do this are often called smart chargers.
How do I spot problems with my charger or the connector?
Problems with a charger or connector show up as longer charging times, a battery that does not charge fully, or one that does not charge at all. Check for visible damage such as broken pins, cracks or signs of corrosion. A loose connection can be the problem too. If the charger has an indicator light, watch it for any fault signals.
How do I look after my charger and connectors so that they last a long time?
Looking after your charger and connectors makes them last longer. Store the charger in a dry, cool place and keep it away from extreme temperatures. Keep the connectors clean and dry. Handle the charger and the connectors with care, so that they do not get damaged. Check them regularly for signs of wear or damage, and you will catch problems early. And always unplug the charger from the battery and from the socket before you set off on your bike.
