General instructions: how to reset an e-bike battery step by step

Before you look at the brand-specific instructions, you can follow these general steps. These simple checks often solve the problem:

  1. Switch the bike off completely. Remove the key and switch off all systems.

  2. Take the battery out of the bike. Check that the contact points are clean and free of dirt or corrosion.

  3. Press the reset button (if there is one). Some batteries have a small button that you have to hold down for a few seconds.

  4. Connect the battery to the charger again. Leave it charging for at least a few hours to reactivate the electronics.

  5. Put the battery back in the bike. Make sure it clicks firmly into place and cannot move.

  6. Test the bike. Switch on the display and check whether the pedal assistance is back.

Still not working, or does the battery keep cutting out? Then go to the instructions for your brand below. Each brand has its own type of battery and electronics, so the reset sometimes works differently.

Waking an e-bike battery from sleep mode

Many e-bike batteries have a sleep mode. This is a safety feature that stops the battery from draining and the cells from being damaged when the bike is not used for a longer period.

  • Standard sleep mode: Connect the battery to the original charger to wake it up. The charge indicator often lights up after a few seconds.

  • With an indicator button: Some batteries have a status or indicator button. Holding it down for a few seconds can wake the battery from sleep mode.

  • Deep sleep mode: If the battery has not been used for months, it can go into a deeper sleep mode. In that case connecting the charger is usually the only way to reactivate the battery. Sometimes you need to charge and disconnect it several times.

Please note: if the battery no longer responds, even after several attempts at charging, it may be deeply discharged or have a faulty BMS. In that case it needs a cell replacement or an inspection by a specialist.

Flyer 36V accu

Resetting a Flyer battery

You can reset your Flyer battery yourself, using the indicator button on the battery. Take the battery out of the bike and put it on the charger. Once the battery is fully charged, take it off the charger.

Now that the battery is full, you can reset your Flyer battery by holding down the indicator button. Do this for about 20 to 30 seconds. When the lights on the display go out, keep the button pressed. Then put the battery on the charger with the button still held down.

The battery now carries on charging and you can let go of the button. You may have to repeat this up to twice. Once the battery is fully charged again, ride it completely empty until the assistance cuts out. You will notice that you can ride further again. Your Flyer battery has now been reset.

Gazelle Innergy 36V accu

Resetting your Gazelle battery yourself

You can reset the Gazelle Innergy yourself. You do this with the button on the back of the battery. The Gazelle Innergy reset button is built into the rear of the light. Use this reset button if the battery no longer starts up: hold the button down for a few seconds. The display often comes back on by itself, which means the reset has worked. You can then charge the battery until it is full again.

Resetting the Gazelle Innergy indicator

You can reset your Gazelle battery yourself. To bring the Gazelle indicator back in line with the kilometres you actually ride, charge the battery completely before you set off. Once the battery is full, ride it empty until the assistance cuts out. Repeat this 4 to 6 times. After that the indicator will be closer to the number of kilometres you can actually ride.

Are you still not getting the distance you want? Then the battery is worn out. In that case we can re-cell the battery, or you can replace it with a new battery. After re-celling your Gazelle Innergy battery we program the new capacity into it as standard. We also update the electronics to the latest version.

Giant twist fietsaccu

Resetting a Giant battery

Can you reset your Giant battery? You can ride your Giant Twist battery completely empty until the assistance cuts out. If you do this after the battery has been charged to full, you have completed one full charge cycle with your Giant battery. If you keep track of the distance on the display, you know exactly how far your Giant battery takes you. Does the capacity fall short of what you expect? Then we have a solution. We can increase the capacity of your e-bike battery, and in a number of cases that of your Giant Twist battery too. You can read more on our Giant battery cell replacement page.

Bosch powerpack 500

Resetting a Bosch battery (PowerPack and PowerTube)

Are you having problems with your Bosch e-bike battery (PowerPack or PowerTube), such as the battery no longer charging, the assistance suddenly cutting out or the LEDs flashing continuously? You can often fix this yourself by resetting the Battery Management System (BMS).

How to reset a Bosch battery

  1. Remove the battery from the bike.

  2. Hold down the on/off button next to the LED indicator for 10 to 20 seconds.

    • On some models this is 10 seconds, on others at least 20 seconds.

  3. Release the button and put the battery back on the bike.

  4. Connect the battery to the Bosch charger and charge it fully.

    • The battery is full when all the LEDs flash briefly or go out.

  5. Then keep riding until the battery is completely empty, and after that charge it fully once more.

This resynchronises the battery and the BMS.

Common problems with Bosch batteries

  • Battery not charging: often caused by deep discharge. A reset sometimes helps; otherwise a repair or a cell replacement is needed.

  • Flashing LEDs: this can point to a communication problem or an internal fault. Check that the battery is making good contact.

  • Battery suddenly cuts out: a reset often solves this, but if the problem keeps coming back the cause may be a faulty BMS or damaged cells.

When a reset is not enough

If the reset does not work or the battery keeps cutting out, there may be more going on:

  • The BMS is faulty

  • There is cell damage or an internal fault (deep discharge, for example).

  • The battery has been affected by moisture or corrosion.

In those cases we can re-cell or repair the battery, so that it works safely and reliably again.

BionX 48V accu

Resetting a BionX battery

You can reset your BionX battery yourself. Here is how it works, step by step. Make sure your BionX battery is fully charged and switch your e-bike on. Hold down the on/off button on the display for at least 20 seconds. You will see the front and rear lights flash in quick succession, which means the reset is complete. The battery now shows the correct charge level.

If you have a re-celled BionX e-bike battery, the capacity has often been increased and the battery indicator no longer matches reality. This has to be programmed by hand after the cell replacement. We make this change in the software as standard with every cell replacement. Is your display showing the wrong reading? Then get in touch with us.

Resetting your Trek battery

You can reset your Trek battery yourself. How you do it depends on the drive system. Trek bikes were supplied with the BionX drive system or the newer Bosch drive system. Both drive systems are explained on this page. If the reset does not work, get in touch with us.

Stella type accu

Resetting a Stella battery

You reset a Stella battery by riding it empty. As soon as the assistance cuts out, the battery is completely empty. The kilometres you have ridden at that point are the battery's actual range. It can happen that the battery stops working or will not charge. A Stella battery that does not charge may have a problem with the battery pack, but it can just as well be a problem with the electronics in the battery. We have seen this many times, and we can replace the complete electronics plus the charger. That keeps the battery going for a few more years and saves you a large expense straight away.

Resetting a Shimano battery

Resetting your Shimano Steps battery

You can often reset your Shimano battery yourself. You do this with the indicator button, which can be on the underside, on the top or sometimes even on the side of the battery. When you press the button, the LEDs show the battery's current charge. If the LEDs do not light up, the battery may be in sleep mode or there may be another problem. In that case connect the charger first.

Need help with a battery problem?

If the indicator does not come on after you have connected the charger, the battery is probably faulty. In that situation we can always inspect your battery and repair it if necessary.

Resetting a Phylion battery

If you have problems charging your Phylion Wall-E battery (2-pin or 5-pin), first try discharging the battery completely and then connect it to the charger. If that does not work, take the battery out of the bike and let it come up to room temperature before you charge it again.

If you have followed these steps and your battery still does not charge, you can try resetting the Phylion battery. Some e-bike batteries have a reset button that makes this easier. With the Phylion Wall-E 2-pin and 5-pin batteries you can wake the battery from sleep mode by holding down the LED indicator button while you connect the battery to the charger. These steps may be enough to get your battery working again.

Resetting your Qwic battery

Is your battery not charging fully, or has it stopped assisting? Start by discharging the battery completely: ride until there is no assistance left, then charge it. Alternatively, take the battery out of your bike and let it come up to room temperature, because cold sometimes causes charging problems. Once the battery has warmed up, you can charge it again.

If your Qwic battery with the orange charging port no longer charges, try a reset. On the left-hand side of the battery, by the LED indicator lights, there is a small white button. Hold this button down for 20 seconds and release it, then press it again for 5 seconds. After these steps your battery has been reset and is ready to be charged.

On some Qwic Premium/Performance models the battery can stop giving assistance because of a blown fuse. This is a known problem, and in certain cases you can check it yourself. The fuse is on the bike side.

Resetting the Qwic display

To reset the Qwic display, hold the button down for more than 3 seconds. To reset the Trip Distance (Trip Dist), press the bottom button for 2 seconds in the Trip Dist screen.

If you still have problems with your Qwic battery after trying these steps, KWS Seuren can help. We can inspect your battery thoroughly and repair it if necessary.

Resetting a Bafang battery

If you have problems charging your Bafang battery, you can reset it. Look on the side of the battery, near the LED indicator lights, for a small white button. Hold this button down for 20 seconds and then release it. Next, press it again, this time for 5 seconds, and release it again. This resets your battery, after which you can charge it as normal. If you have followed these steps, the battery of your Bafang e-bike should now be reset.

Are you still having problems charging or discharging your Bafang battery? There may be a fault in the electronics or the cells of your Bafang battery.

Resetting a Cortina battery (Ecomo and other models)

A common problem with Cortina e-bikes is that the battery no longer charges properly or the assistance cuts out. A reset of the battery often solves this. That applies in particular to the widely used Cortina Ecomo batteries.

Step by step: resetting a Cortina battery

  1. Take the battery out of the bike and check that there is no dirt or moisture on the contact points.

  2. Press the reset button (usually a small button on the side of the battery). Hold it down for 5 to 10 seconds.

  3. Put the battery back in the bike and make sure it clicks into place properly.

  4. Switch the bike on at the display and check whether the assistance works again.

  5. Charge the battery fully to 100% and check that the charger is not flashing (this can point to a faulty cell or BMS).

Resetting a Trenergy battery

Are you having problems with a Trenergy battery that no longer charges or no longer gives assistance? A reset often helps. Most Trenergy batteries have a reset button, often near the LED indicators or sometimes concealed in the rear light of the battery.

Step by step: resetting a Trenergy battery

  1. Find the reset button. Check the battery. The button is usually by the LED lights or on the back of the battery.

  2. Hold the button down. Press the reset button for 20 seconds or longer.

  3. Release. Wait a moment after you have let go of the button.

  4. Put the battery on the charger. Connect the battery to the official Trenergy charger and charge it fully.

  5. Test the battery. Put the battery back on the bike and see whether the assistance works again.

Not working? Then the battery may be deeply discharged or there may be a fault in the BMS (battery management system). In that case it needs an inspection by a specialist.

Resetting a Sparta battery

Sparta has used different systems over the years: the ION line, E-motion, the B-series and later Bosch as well. The reset differs per system.

With the ION frame battery it sometimes helps to take the green fuse at the bottom of the battery out for 10 minutes. Leave the display on the bike while you do this. In some cases a full reset of an ION battery can only be done by the dealer.

If you have a different model, ride the battery completely empty. Empty means: the display is off and the assistance has gone completely. Then charge it to full. After you have repeated this at least five times, the reading on the display is closer to what is really in the battery.

If that does not help, the battery itself is worn out. What we can do for your model is on the page with Sparta batteries.

Why reset an e-bike battery?

There are a few reasons to reset your e-bike battery from time to time. A battery can stop performing as it should, or refuse to work at all. Resetting the battery is one possible solution. It clears small software faults and can reactivate a battery that has gone into sleep mode. The method differs per brand, Flyer or Gazelle for example, and not every battery has a reset button. The general steps at the top of this page are the place to start.

Resetting your e-bike battery regularly

A lithium-ion battery does not need to be run flat regularly. It actually lasts longer if you do not ride it empty. Riding until the assistance cuts out and then charging it fully is only useful as a check: it shows you the real range and helps the charge indicator line up again. Once or twice a year is plenty for that, and only when the indicator seems to be off.

What do you do if a reset does not help?

Then the battery is worn out or faulty. The cause is the age of the cells, the number of charge cycles or a fault in the electronics. Another reset will not fix that.

Register your battery through the product page for your model in the overview of batteries for e-bikes. We carry out an intake test and you receive a proposal with a price. If a part is broken, a repair is enough. If the cells are worn out, we replace them in a cell replacement. That starts at €300, and with many models you can choose more capacity at the same time.

If you decline our proposal, you pay the €95 inspection fee. All prices are on the page what does an e-bike battery cost. How long your battery will be away is explained under lead time.

If you ride a duo bike or a tricycle, the brand on the battery is often different from the brand on the bike. The page about the battery of a duo bike or tricycle explains how to find the type.

Frequently asked questions

Switch the bike off and take the battery out. Check that the contact points are clean. If your battery has a reset button, hold it down for a few seconds. Then connect the battery to the charger for a few hours and put it back until it clicks into place. The reset works slightly differently for each brand.

Connect the battery to the original charger. After a few seconds the charge indicator lights up. If your battery has an indicator button, hold it down for a few seconds. After months of standing unused, the battery sometimes needs to be charged and disconnected several times.

Sleep mode is a safeguard. It stops the battery from draining further and the cells from being damaged when the bike stands unused for a long time. The battery switches itself off until it is back on the charger.

Then the battery is deeply discharged or the electronics (the BMS) are faulty. A reset no longer helps in that case. The battery has to be tested. KWS Seuren carries out an intake test and then makes a proposal for a repair or a cell replacement.

No. A reset only restarts the battery's electronics. It does not change the cells. So a battery with worn cells does not get any better from a reset either.

KWS Seuren tests the battery and makes a proposal with a price. A cell replacement starts at €300; most cost between €350 and €500. The price of a repair depends on the part. If you decline the proposal, you pay the €95 inspection fee.
