What is the best way to charge my battery?
Look after your battery like this. Charge it regularly, for example after every ride. Do not let it run completely flat. If you do not ride much, still top it up regularly.
My charger gets warm. Why is that?
Every adapter gets warm in use. That is the result of the current flowing through it.
Some chargers get very hot, though. Too hot means you can no longer hold the charger in your hand. In that case something is wrong with your charger or your battery.
A charger that gets too hot is often being overloaded. That usually means it is worn out and can no longer deliver the power required. It is then sensible to replace your charger.
If you buy a new charger and it also gets hot quickly, the cause is usually a worn battery. The battery needs so much charging that the charger is overloaded. The charger then gets very hot, and the risk of damage or burning out is very high. In that case it is sensible to have a cell replacement (re-celling) carried out.
Should the battery stay on the charger?
No. The newer lithium-ion cells should not sit at too high a voltage for too long. To extend the life of your battery, disconnect the charger as soon as possible once the battery is full. Try not to leave it on the charger for more than 24 hours.
How long does it take to charge my battery?
On average it takes about 4 to 5 hours to fully charge the battery of your e-bike. That does depend on the capacity of the battery and on the charger: a battery with a higher capacity takes longer to charge.
My battery now takes much longer to charge. How is that possible?
If you chose more capacity for your e-bike battery, charging can take longer. A quick sum:
Old charger with the old capacity:
2 A charger, 10 Ah battery. 10 / 2 = 5 hours of charging.
Old charger with the new capacity:
2 A charger, 20 Ah battery. 20 / 2 = 10 hours of charging.
Is there a fast charger for my e-bike battery?
Some e-bike batteries can be used with a fast charger. Whether yours can depends on the type of battery and its remaining capacity. See our page with chargers. Is your charger not listed there? Ask us what is possible.
What does it cost to charge an e-bike battery?
Charging an e-bike battery is cheap. A modern battery of, say, 500 Wh, which can sometimes take you as far as 100 km, charges very quickly. At current energy prices of about 20 cents per kWh, that comes to roughly 10 euro cents per charge.
How and where can I charge my e-bike battery?
On most bikes you can charge the battery while it is still on the bike. Some batteries can also be taken out and charged indoors, for example.
What if my e-bike battery runs flat?
If the battery runs flat during a ride, you can usually still cycle on. The newest e-bikes are light enough to give little resistance when you ride without assistance. There are several ways to avoid being stranded on a long ride.
- Charge the battery during a stop. E-bikes are becoming more and more common, and the number of charging points is growing with them. An hour of charging is usually enough to get you home or to carry on with your trip.
- Take a spare battery. A second battery can give you up to twice the range. We supply both new and refurbished batteries for this.
- Ride the battery completely flat once, note how far you got, and try to stay under that distance next time.
- A cell replacement lets you increase the capacity of your battery, sometimes to as much as double the original. Then you do not need to carry a spare battery or charge along the way.
