What should you look out for in an e-bike battery?
- Capacity: the higher the capacity in Wh, the greater the range in kilometres. The most common capacities are between 300 Wh and 600 Wh.
- Charging time: this depends on the capacity of the battery and on how full it is. It runs from 1.5 hours to as much as 10 hours per charge cycle.
- Position of the battery: batteries come in all shapes and sizes. The most common position is in the rear rack. The battery on the frame, mounted on the outside that is, has become just as familiar, and batteries built into the frame are now common too.
- The assistance levels of the motor: at a higher level the motor gives you more power, but the battery runs down faster. A lower level lets you ride for longer.
- As a rule, the capacity determines the price of the battery. An e-bike battery with a high energy content uses cells with a higher energy density, or simply has more cells in it.
What is the range of my e-bike battery?
Range is the deciding factor for most e-bike owners. It largely determines what the bike can be used for. Is it for commuting to work, or for relaxed rides at the weekend? The manufacturer tries to give as accurate an indication as possible. Unfortunately, nobody can say exactly what your range will be, because several factors affect it.
The factors
- Capacity of the battery (for example 300Wh or 500Wh)
- Motor
- Weight of the rider
- Assistance level (Eco, Normal, Sport or Turbo)
- Wind (tailwind or headwind)
- How much you pedal when setting off
- Terrain (hills or flat)
- Type of e-bike (city bike, e-mountain bike or, for example, a duo bike)
- Riding position
- Tyre tread
- Correct tyre pressure
- Any accessories, such as a light or a display
Ways to increase the range of your own battery
Most of the factors above are also where you can win range: choose a lower assistance level, keep your tyres at the right pressure and set off in a low gear. More on this on our page about e-bike range. Has the battery itself lost capacity? Then a cell replacement with higher-capacity cells gives you more range.
How do I charge my battery safely and properly?
- Put your battery on the charger in a safe place. Not under coats or newspapers.
- Charge your battery during the day as much as you can, and check on it regularly.
- As soon as the battery is full, you can unplug the charger from the socket.
- Do not put the battery on a radiator or in direct sunlight. Make sure the room is well ventilated.
