Replacing your e-bike battery because the capacity is dropping

After a number of years the capacity of an e-bike battery drops. You can then no longer cover the kilometres you always used to. If you want to start making long rides, a capacity that was once enough may now fall short. The capacity the bike came with as standard can be a disappointment then, too. On many models we can raise the capacity with a cell replacement (re-celling), in which we replace all the cells with new ones.

Replacing the e-bike battery because it no longer does anything

If the battery has stopped working altogether, you will want to replace your e-bike battery. That is not always necessary. The battery may only need a small repair, or it may need to be brought back out of deep discharge. If you have your battery inspected by us, we find out what is causing the problem and try to solve it at the lowest possible cost. It can also turn out that your battery does not need replacing at all.

The battery no longer charges fully

Now and then a battery stops charging all the way. That can have several causes, such as an imbalance in the cells, a problem with the electronics, or even a charger that no longer works properly. So if your e-bike battery is not charging, the cause can lie with the charger as well as with the battery pack.

Replace your e-bike battery or have it re-celled?

Sometimes you are better off replacing your e-bike battery than having it re-celled. Say your old battery still has more than enough capacity and you want a second one. Then go for a replacement battery. We also sell new batteries for a range of models.

Is your old battery worn out, or has it stopped working altogether? Then a cell replacement usually works out cheaper. We replace the cells in the battery with higher-quality ones that last longer. These are lithium-ion cells. With a cell replacement you can also choose a higher capacity, which gives you more range.

How do I work out which new battery suits my e-bike?

Search by the brand and model of your e-bike and the brand of the motor. Check the position of the motor as well (front wheel, mid-drive or rear wheel) and where the battery sits on the bike (on the frame or on the rear rack, for example).

The main factors when choosing a new e-bike battery

Look at the capacity (Ah), the voltage (V) and the total energy in Wh. Make sure these specifications match your current battery; the voltage must not be different. Check that the new battery physically fits and is compatible with your bike and its drive system. You also have to choose between an original manufacturer's battery and a compatible battery from another brand, weighing up both price and quality.

How do I know when it is time to replace my e-bike battery?

Signs that your e-bike battery needs replacing include a clearly shorter range, with the battery running down faster than it used to, and a longer charging time than normal. If the battery no longer charges fully, or if you can see physical damage such as swelling or leakage, it is also time to replace it. Age is another indication: most e-bike batteries last about 5 to 8 years.

What should I do with my old e-bike battery after replacing it?

Old e-bike batteries have to be disposed of in an environmentally sound way because of the harmful chemicals they contain. Take them to a collection point for hazardous waste or to a recycling centre that specialises in processing batteries. Most bike shops take in old batteries too. Never put the battery in the household rubbish and never dump it outdoors. If you live in the Netherlands, you can also hand in old batteries at KWS Seuren.

After how many km should you replace an e-bike battery?

The life of an e-bike battery is usually measured not in kilometres but in charge cycles and years. An average e-bike battery lasts about 500 to 1,000 full charge cycles, which can work out at roughly 5 to 8 years, depending on use. The number of kilometres you can cover before the battery needs replacing depends on several factors, such as the type of battery, its capacity, how often you use the bike and the conditions you ride in. If you notice that the range has dropped considerably or the battery no longer charges fully, it is probably time to replace it, whatever the number of kilometres you have covered.

Cost of replacing an electric bike battery

The cost of replacing an electric bike battery varies widely. It depends on the type and brand of the bike, the capacity of the battery, and whether you choose an original battery from the brand or a compatible one from a third party. A new e-bike battery costs roughly between €400 and €1,200. Batteries with a higher capacity or particular technologies, such as lithium-ion batteries, can be more expensive. Bear in mind that a higher price often also means a longer life or more range. A cell replacement is often the cheaper alternative: at KWS Seuren it starts at €300. All prices are on the page what does an e-bike battery cost.

Replacing an electric bike battery

Replacing the battery of an electric bike takes some care and attention. Start by checking the specifications of your current battery, including the voltage (V) and the capacity (Ah). Make sure you choose a replacement battery that is compatible with your bike. When you remove the old battery, make sure the bike is switched off and handle the battery carefully to avoid damage. Fit the new battery and check that all connections are firmly and correctly made. Test the bike after the swap to make sure everything works as it should. It is also advisable to complete the first charge cycle in full before you use the bike. If in doubt, always consult your bike's manual or contact a specialist.
