Instructions after a cell replacement or repair

Using your battery

The capacity of your e-bike battery will decrease somewhat over time. This is a normal process, and riding economically or intensively makes no significant difference to it. What matters is that you use and charge your battery regularly, even when you do not need it often. That prevents unnecessary ageing and keeps the battery performing for longer.

Prevent deep discharge

A deep discharge can seriously damage your battery. It happens when a battery is stored completely or almost empty. Always put your battery away charged, preferably in a dry place at room temperature (between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius). Check the charge every month and top it up if needed to prevent deep discharge.

1. Battery fully charged

The batteries we send out are fully charged and ready to use. You can set off with your re-celled or repaired battery straight away.

2. Running in the battery

After a cell replacement the battery needs to be run in. This does not always apply to a repaired battery, but we recommend it anyway to get the best performance. To run it in, ride the battery completely empty 4 to 6 times, until you feel the bike's assistance drop away. Charge it fully to 100% again each time. This gives you the maximum range and makes the battery display on your bike more accurate.

3. Charging the battery

For the first few charges, charge the battery fully to 100%. If you chose a higher capacity, charging can take a little longer.

  • Tip: Plug the charger into the socket first and then into the battery.
  • Take the battery off the charger as soon as it is fully charged. Modern chargers do switch off automatically, but it is better not to leave the battery connected unnecessarily.
  • Charge the battery during the day if you can, on a stable, non-flammable surface. Avoid charging near flammable materials and consider fitting a smoke alarm in the room where you charge.

4. Range

Once you have run the battery in fully 4 to 6 times, you will notice that the range improves and the battery display becomes more accurate. This means your battery has reached its best performance.

5. Water damage

Most e-bike batteries are splash-proof but not fully waterproof. In heavy rain, water can get into the battery. Make sure your battery is not exposed to water for long periods. If the battery has got wet, let it dry for a few days at room temperature. Never put it directly on or against a radiator, because condensation can cause corrosion and damage the inside of the battery.
