Repair before full replacement
Are the cells still good, while the electronics, the wiring or a connector is defective? Then a targeted repair keeps more of the existing battery than replacing all the cells.
Cell replacement when the cells are really worn
When cell ageing is the cause, cell replacement puts the existing housing and the usable electronics back to work. That extends the service life of a product platform. We do not claim that every cell replacement has the same environmental impact.
Refurbished and exchange
For suitable product families, a tested battery from stock is a quick replacement. The returned battery goes back into our process and is assessed: repair, reuse of parts or another suitable solution. Read more about refurbished and exchange.
Measure before we claim CO₂ savings
We are working on an LCA and CO₂ substantiation based on product data, weights and historical order data. We will only publish a CO₂ figure once the system boundaries, the basis for comparison, the source data and the calculation method are fixed.
In practice: replace only what is broken
With the 782 VanMoof batteries we handled in 21 months, full cell replacement was not the default. Much of the work involved SMD fuses, electronics and deep discharge. Where that was the problem, the good cells stayed in place.
Frequently asked questions
That depends on the defect, the remaining quality of the battery, the parts used, the logistics and the method of comparison. That is why we do not quote general percentages without substantiation.

Not yet. We will only do that once the calculation method and the source data have been validated. Until then we stick to what we can demonstrate in the process.
We write it off. After that the battery follows the write-off process we have agreed with you.
