E-bike batteries

At KWS Seuren you can order a battery for your e-bike in three ways: new, refurbished, or a cell replacement for your own battery. A cell replacement costs from €300, a new original battery €400 to €1,200. Find the brand of your bike below, choose your model and see the price for each option. All three come with a 2-year warranty. Shipping is free within the Netherlands. Can't find your battery? Email info@kwsseuren.nl or call +31 (0)485 782 565.

Which battery fits your e-bike?

Not every battery fits every e-bike. The battery has to match the motor system of your bike. A Gazelle with a Bosch motor needs a Bosch battery, a Batavus with a Yamaha drive needs a Yamaha battery. So the brand of your bike and the brand of your battery are not always the same.

The quickest way to find the right battery is to look at the one you have now. It carries a type number, on a Bosch for example "PowerPack 500" or "PowerTube 625". Look that number up in the overview above. If the label is unreadable or you no longer have a battery, search by the brand of your bike and choose your model. You will then see which batteries fit.

Check where the battery sits as well: rear rack, frame or down tube. A rack battery does not fit in a frame mount. If you are not sure which type you have, look at the position of the battery on your bike.

New, refurbished or cell replacement: what is the difference?

All three give you a working battery with a 2-year warranty. They differ in price and in how soon you have the battery. They also differ in whether you keep your own casing.

New battery. A factory-new battery from the original brand, the same product the bike shop sells. From stock it is at your door within 1 to 3 days. Choose this if your battery is damaged, if a cell replacement (re-celling) is not possible for your model, or if you simply want a new one.

Refurbished battery. A battery from our own workshop with new cells, a casing and electronics that have been checked, and a tested capacity. If we have it in stock, you have it within 1 to 3 days. If not, we build it as soon as you order. Choose this if you cannot do without your bike or if your own battery is past saving.

Cell replacement of your own battery. You send us your battery; we replace all the cells, test the electronics and send it back with a test report. You keep your own casing, and for many models you can choose a higher capacity than the original had, for example from 400 to 500 Wh. This is the cheapest option. How long your battery is away is stated on the lead time page.

If only one part is faulty, such as the charging port or the electronics, you need none of the three: a repair is enough. New, refurbished, cell replacement and repair are all under one roof here, and the product page shows them side by side for each model. For more than a quarter of the models, including the Bosch PowerTube series, a cell replacement is not possible; for those you choose between new and refurbished.

Not every option exists for every model. For some batteries, such as the Bosch PowerTube series, we do not offer a cell replacement, but we do offer a repair or a refurbished battery. The product page shows what is possible for your battery. Want to know more about the process? Read what an e-bike battery cell replacement involves or see how a repair works.

What does an e-bike battery cost?

A cell replacement starts at €300; most cost between €350 and €500. A new original battery costs €400 to €1,200, depending on brand and capacity. A refurbished battery usually sits in between; the price for each model is on the product page.

An example: the Bosch PowerPack 500 for the rear rack costs €395 as a cell replacement with us, €525 refurbished and €675 new. All prices include shipping within the Netherlands. What each price covers, and why some models show no cell replacement price, is explained under what does an e-bike battery cost.

Which capacity do you need?

Capacity is given in watt-hours (Wh). More Wh means more range, but also a higher price and more weight. For a daily commute of up to 15 kilometres each way, 400 Wh is enough; for longer rides or hills, 500 Wh or more is more comfortable. If you are torn between two capacities, take the larger one: a battery you do not run flat lasts longer. What Ah and Wh mean, and how far each capacity takes you, is explained on our page about capacity and number of Ah.

When does your battery need replacing?

An e-bike battery lasts 5 years on average, or 500 to 1,000 charge cycles. After that the range drops: where you used to manage 80 kilometres, you now get 50. The battery is not broken, but the cells hold less energy. Three signs: your range is clearly shorter, the last bars on the display suddenly disappear, or the battery no longer charges to full.

That does not mean you have to buy new straight away. In a cell replacement your battery gets new cells and performs like new again. You can read more about lifespan, and about what we see in batteries that come back to us after years, under how long does an e-bike battery last.

Frequently asked questions

A new original e-bike battery costs €400 to €1,200, depending on brand and capacity. A cell replacement of your own battery starts at €300, and most cost between €350 and €500. So check first whether a repair, a cell replacement or a suitable replacement battery is possible for your bike; that is usually cheaper than buying new.

The difference between a 400 Wh and a 500 Wh battery is mainly the amount of energy the battery can store. A 500 Wh battery has about 25% more capacity than a 400 Wh battery, which matters most if you ride longer distances or often use a higher assistance level. With Bosch, for example, a 500 Wh battery is usually slightly heavier and takes a little longer to charge fully. So a larger battery is not always the best choice, but it is the logical one if you want more range.

An e-bike battery lasts 5 years on average, or 500 to 1,000 charge cycles. The exact lifespan depends on how you use the battery, how you charge it, the temperature and how you store it. If you notice that your range is clearly dropping or the battery is becoming less reliable, that is the moment to have it inspected. If your model can be re-celled, a cell replacement is then a good alternative to a new battery.

The best battery for an e-bike is first of all the one that technically matches the drive system of your bike. A Trek e-bike with a Bosch drive, for example, needs a Bosch battery. So you cannot pick just any battery. Only after that do you look at the capacity that suits the way you ride. If you mostly ride short trips, a smaller battery is often enough. If you want more range, a battery with a higher capacity is the better choice. If you are unsure which battery fits best, it is sensible to have us check first which options are available for your model.

No. The battery has to match the drive system of your bike: a Bosch motor needs a Bosch battery. At KWS Seuren you search by the brand and model of your bike, so you always find a battery that fits.

KWS Seuren ships a new battery, or a refurbished battery that is in stock, within 1 to 3 days. Shipping is free within the Netherlands; for other countries, ask us about the options first. A cell replacement of your own battery, or a refurbished battery that still has to be built, takes longer; how long is stated on the lead time page.

Yes. Every refurbished battery from KWS Seuren has new cells and is tested for capacity, voltage and cell balance before it leaves the workshop. It comes with a 2-year warranty, the same as a new battery.
